Inside the War Room: Pachall’s Comeback

May 23rd, 2013

Changing His Ways
One of the more intriguing prospects in 2014 draft is TCU QB Casey Pachall. Pachall has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in college football. In 2011, he set school records for completion percentage, completions and passing yards. He went on to have a great start to the 2012 season — in the four games he played, he had a pass efficiency of 180, 10 touchdown passes and completed 66 percent of his passes. Monitoring Reshad Jones’ Contract Situation

Reshad Jones

Is a long-term deal in the future for Jones?

MDD Editor: Kevin Fishbain

Teams don’t like distractions, especially during OTAs in May, but when players don’t attend voluntary workouts, it gets attention. That microscope focused on Miami Dolphins safety Reshad Jones this week. Jones was not at the team’s facility on Monday as a supposed statement — Jones is entering the last year of his rookie contract and set to make $1.323 million in 2013. According to the Miami Herald, Jones reported to the OTAs that began on Tuesday after GM Jeff Ireland promised Jones’ representation that “eventual” contract talks would take place. Jamar Taylor Surgery Setback

May 22nd, 2013

MDD Assistant Editor:  Chad Pullen

Last season at this time, the Miami Dolphins figured to start the year with a pair of up-and-coming corners they had taken in the 2009 draft in Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. Today, both of those players are gone, instead replaced by what is quickly becoming a mash unit. Taylor should be back in plenty of time for camp and will only miss offseason workouts, however for a rookie, those are important reps to be had.  Read the rest of this entry »

MDD Assistant Editor:  Chad Pullen

With OTA’s starting up today, we take a very early look at what the 53 man roster might look like when Miami takes the field in Cleveland on opening weekend.  Still a ways to go as well as no one really knows what other players may come available in June when roster cuts begin happening around the league, so there are still free agent additions that could come in and take the place of a younger player that’s been groomed for a job the past year or so.  Read the rest of this entry »

When Should the Dolphins Trade Cameron Wake?

Assets.

Rosters are built around assets, just like any other business.  Stock values rise and fall.  A player plays well one season, his value goes up.  He has a poor year the next year, his value goes down.   The question as always is, when do you sell?  When is the right time to move the asset for the most return you can get?   In the NFL, that time is brief and limited.  Recently, the Dolphins let the asset that was Reggie Bush walk as a free agent, primarily because he was nearing the age of 30, a magical number for running backs where their careers tend to decline sharply.  The Dolphins backup stock was a Fourth Round draft choice from 2012 in Lamar Miller.  Much smaller contract, longer long term value, more return on the investment the Dolphins were willing to make.  Had Bush been 26 instead of nearing 29, Miami might have gladly paid the 4 year 16 million dollar contract he was given by Detroit.  Read the rest of this entry »
